This guide explains when a rotation schedule is more useful than a random shuffle, walks through a concrete example, and covers the practical situations that come up in real classrooms.

When a rotation schedule beats a random shuffle

If you ask students to pair up freely, the same confident students tend to find each other every time while quieter students get left out or stuck with the same partner. A random name-draw is better, but it can still repeat pairs by chance, and it gives you no visibility into who has worked with whom.

A rotation schedule solves this. Instead of drawing names each round, you generate a full set of rounds in advance. Each round is designed so that, as far as possible, every pair is new. You can see the entire schedule at a glance, know exactly who partners with whom in each round, and spot repeats before they happen.

A rotation is the better choice when you want fairness over multiple rounds, when you need a printed plan for a substitute teacher, or when students should not be choosing their own partners. A fresh random shuffle is fine for a one-off activity where you do not care about repeats.

How to enter a roster and generate rounds

The Partner Generator works in a few steps. First, enter your roster in the participant names box, one name per line. You can paste a class list directly from a spreadsheet or text file. The tool accepts up to 200 names.

Next, set the number of rounds you want. The tool shows how many unique rounds are possible with your current roster size. For an even-numbered group of N students, the maximum is N minus 1 rounds before pairs start repeating. If you request more rounds than that, the tool warns you and later rounds may contain repeats.

Click Generate Schedule. The tool produces all rounds at once and displays them in a scrollable list. Each round shows the pairings, and any repeated pair is flagged with a Repeat badge so you can spot it immediately. You can mark rounds as completed as your class works through them, which matters for the regeneration feature described below.

A worked four-student example

Here is a concrete example using four students named Alex, Blair, Casey, and Drew. With four participants, the maximum number of unique rounds is three (N minus 1). Here is the schedule the tool produces:

Across three rounds, every student partners with every other student exactly once. Alex works with Blair, then Casey, then Drew. Blair works with Alex, then Drew, then Casey. The same is true for Casey and Drew. No pair repeats.

With an unchanged, even-sized roster and no additional restrictions, each participant can meet every other participant once across N minus 1 rounds. This guarantee applies only to that situation. It does not extend to trio mode, changing attendance, or arbitrary restrictions such as preventing certain students from being paired together.

Handling absences

When a student is absent, open the Advanced Options section and uncheck that student in the attendance list. The tool shows how many participants are currently active. If attendance changes after you have already generated a schedule, a message appears prompting you to mark completed rounds and then regenerate future rounds.

To regenerate, click the Regenerate from this round link on any uncompleted round. The tool preserves all rounds you have marked as completed, rebuilds the pairing history from those completed rounds, and regenerates the remaining rounds using only the currently active students. This means your future rounds will not include absent students, and pairs that already happened in completed rounds will not be repeated.

Odd-sized groups: trio versus rotating bye

When you have an odd number of active participants, the tool offers two modes in the Advanced Options section:

  • Group of Three:One group of three is formed each round so nobody sits out. Trio scheduling minimizes repeats but cannot guarantee zero repeats, because each trio round creates three pairs at once instead of one.
  • Rotating Bye:One student sits out each round (a bye). Byes rotate as evenly as possible across rounds. This mode preserves the no-repeat guarantee for pairs among the remaining students.

Choose trio mode when you want everyone participating every round and can accept some repeats. Choose bye mode when you want to guarantee no repeated pairs among the active students and do not mind one student sitting out each round.

When repeats become unavoidable

With an even-sized roster of N students, there are only N minus 1 unique rounds. If you request more rounds than that, the tool warns you with a banner above the schedule, and rounds beyond the maximum may contain repeated pairs. Each repeated pair is marked with a Repeat badge so you can see it at a glance.

Repeats also become unavoidable in trio mode, when attendance changes mid-cycle, or when you add restrictions such as keeping certain students apart. The tool flags repeats transparently rather than hiding them.

Draft schedules versus completed-round history

The tool distinguishes between draft rounds and completed rounds. When you generate a schedule, all rounds start as drafts. As your class works through them, click Mark completed on each round. This matters in two ways:

  • When you regenerate future rounds after an attendance change, the tool rebuilds the pairing history only from completed rounds. Draft rounds that you never ran are discarded and replaced.
  • The History Summary card shows how many of your generated rounds are completed and whether any contain repeats, so you can track progress.

This means you can generate a full schedule at the start of a term, work through it round by round, and adjust on the fly when life happens.

Saving, printing, and exporting

Your participant list, attendance settings, odd-number mode, and number of rounds are saved in your browser automatically. They will be there the next time you open the tool on the same device. The generated rounds themselves are not saved across page reloads, so print or export them before closing the tab.

The tool offers three export options above the schedule:

  • Copy copies the full schedule as plain text to your clipboard.
  • Print opens your browser print dialog so you can print or save as PDF.
  • CSV downloads a spreadsheet file with one row per pairing, including round number, pair type, and repeat status.

Use Reset to clear all rounds and pairing history. The tool asks for confirmation first because this cannot be undone.
